Personal Goals
I intend to use this project to improve my skills in both game design and development, specifically focusing on mobile games. These four are going to be my key focuses for personal growth during the development of the project.
- To learn how to use, and make a mobile game for IOS in, Unity. I will prioritise 2D development and how to best make 2D games in Unity
- To develop my knowledge of UI design
- To learn how to publish a game on the App Store, and how best to attract players
- To create a fully functional mobile game that can be used, in my portfolio, to demonstrate my technical abilities in design, art and programming
Project Goals
Other than being a fully playable mobile title, though it does not need to be published by the end of the project, the game must achieve the following:
- Be an engaging experience that challenges players but also makes them want to keep playing
- Ensure that the experience as a whole, between the core gameplay loop of avoiding asteroids and the slightly larger gameplay loop of upgrading the spaceship, is cohesive
- Have clear patterns that players can learn, so that they may get better at the game. Players should be able to easily see that they are making progress here, as their high scores after each run should gradually increase as they play
- Contain interesting modules that make a noticeable difference to the gameplay
- Maintain a consistent art style for the core visual elements: the modules of the spaceship, the civilisations and space. The civilisations should each be visually distinct and most players should be able to tell which city is in the background, just from looking at it
- Be a playful artefact that demonstrates how, according to the theory of general relativity, a spaceship outside of the pull of the Earth’s gravitational field will experience time faster than those on the planet’s surface
